Virtual Language Solutions for Global Communication - Creative Word

Multinational corporations are used to participating in multilingual meetings, conferences and events in today’s international marketplace but the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we share in these occasions.

Before Covid-19, participants would travel the globe to take part in multilingual industry events with speakers from around the world coming together to share knowledge, expertise and experiences but, with the continued effects of the pandemic, these ‘in-person’ meetings have had to move to virtual, remote meetings with participants based at their homes.

These ‘remote’ meetings, while being more environmentally friendly and less travel dependent, come with language barriers which would usually be covered by interpreters ‘in situ’ at the event.

Unfortunately, not everyone speaks multiple languages or has an interpreter at home to translate, so communication during multilingual, virtual meetings, events or webinars can become problematic.

At Creative Word, we believe multilingual communication is key to understanding, improving working relationships and encouraging dynamic solutions, so we have been busy developing additional interpretation tools that will allow businesses to host virtual events (where participants may be speaking different languages) with a first-class interpretation service – all from the comfort of their own home and using familiar platforms such as, Zoom or Webex.

Below you’ll find more information on virtual interpretation and how it can work for you. Of course, if you have any questions, or would like us to arrange virtual interpretation for your remote event, please contact us here.

Virtual/Remote Simultaneous Interpretation

Under usual circumstances, remote interpretation works by having all participants together in one place with the interpreters working ‘remotely’ elsewhere. The interpreters are connected with the sound system of the venue, and live video feed, so they can simultaneously interpret as the discussions move forward.

However, this can work just as well using a video conferencing platform, where participants are in multiple locations, linked to interpreters who are also in various locations.

Simultaneous interpretation works well for speakers and listeners who require an instant translation, in real time, so they can fully participate in the event or meeting.

At Creative Word we are able to offer remote simultaneous interpretation in almost any language and we work with interpreters who are specialists in many industries so you can be certain of a professional, accurate interpretation every time.

Consecutive Interpretation

This type of interpreting can also be used remotely with great success.

Consecutive interpretation is the type of interpretation you will probably have seen on TV when a government official makes a speech to a foreign nation. It works by allowing the speaker to say what they need to before the interpreter then translates for the audience.

Unlike simultaneous interpretation, there is a pause while the speaker waits for the interpreter to translate, so it is a slightly slower process, but can be beneficial in instances such as, when only one language pair is being used (for example, English and Arabic), when there are only two participants, or when there is a basic level of understanding of the second language but not enough to impart full comprehension or participate confidently in a two-way discussion.

Consecutive interpretation is ideal for use on the telephone, or via video conference platforms where there are only two languages in use, and is advantageous as listeners can hear the original (alongside the translation) so they can better gauge tone, nuance and the message of the speaker.

The only disadvantage with this system is the length of time involved, due to two people speaking the same message, so it will take double the time.
